UT board taking NCAA report `very seriously'

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- The University of Tennessee trustees' vice chairman says the board is taking allegations about athletic department violations "very seriously."

Vice chairman Jim Murphy during a meeting Friday in Chattanooga told members they can direct any questions to UT-Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek.

In the only public mention of the matter at the meeting, Murphy said the board hopes the process is as swift and painless as possible, although he added it's "not going to be painless."

The board chairman, Gov. Bill Haslam, told reporters it would be inappropriate for him to comment about the allegations.

The NCAA has notified the university that both basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former football coach Lane Kiffin committed recruiting violations.
