(utsports.com) -- At the September meeting of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, University of Tennessee Director of Athletics Mike Hamilton was named to the Executive Committee of the organization. The Executive Committee consists of industry leaders among those who serve in the director of athletics role at Division I-A schools, including a representative from each of the 11 Division I-A conferences. Hamilton is serving as the representative from the Southeastern Conference.
The Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, led by Executive Director Dutch Baughman, a former athletic director at Oregon State University, is a service organization that provides and coordinates a comprehensive array of professional services in order to benefit member schools, with the philosophy that as stewards of the profession, athletic directors bear responsibility for all facets of professional administration of the intercollegiate athletic programs within the community of higher education.
“Since the Board of Trustees meets in person only one time a year, it is crucial to the administration of the Association and the profession, that we have direct input from the Board members throughout the year,” said Baughman. “The Board plays a very significant and meaningful role in the business of the Association. We are especially pleased the SEC representative is Mike Hamilton. Mike has been a very strong participant in all Association activities for many years, and his leadership on a national level has made a real difference. We are a very active Association, with direct involvement in all aspects of intercollegiate athletic administration.”
Dan Guererro, director of athletics at UCLA currently serves as the Association President. Other members of the executive committee of the organization include: 1st Vice-President: Brad Bates, Miami University (MAC); 2nd Vice President: Jamie Pollard, Iowa State (Big 12); Kirby Hocutt, Miami (Fla.), (ACC); Jeff Hathaway, Connecticut (Big East); Morgan Burke, Purdue (Big 10); Ian McCaw, Baylor (Big 12); Dean Lee, Arkansas State (Sun Belt); Richard Giannini, Southern Miss (Conference USA); Chris Hill, Utah (Mountain West); Bob DeCarolis, Oregon State (Pac-10); Cary Groth, Nevada (WAC); Ex Officio members Mike Cleary (NACDA) and Executive Director Dutch Baughman; and all past presidents.
“It is an honor to be selected to the Executive Committee of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association,” said Hamilton. “The opportunity to represent the interests of the SEC as well as the 120 schools in the FBS as we help set the direction of the critical issues facing Division I athletics in the coming years is exciting and humbling.”
Hamilton has served as the director of athletics at the University of Tennessee since 2003, and during that time frame, Tennessee has finished in the Top 16 of the NACDA Director’s Cup six times in seven years, including two top-10 finishes. Total giving to UT Athletics has more than doubled during his tenure (from $19.5 million annually to $43.4 million in 2009-10), and additional financial highlights include athletics endowments of $32 million, a multimedia rights partnership with IMG College worth a minimum of $133 million through 2022, two adidas sponsorship deals totaling more than $40 million and $230 million in new or renovated facilities since 2003.
The financial success of the department has allowed UT Athletics to make significant contributions to the academic campus of the UT Knoxville campus, including direct cash support of $10.3 million in 2009-10.
Additionally, the following academic accolades have been accomplished during Hamilton’s tenure: 12 first-team Academic All-Americans, two SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year, 404 student-athletes earning degrees and a total of 1,052 student-athletes earning Academic All-SEC honors. In addition, 29 former Vols who left school to pursue professional athletic careers have returned to finish their degree requirements through the Renewing Academic Commitment (RAC) program administered by the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center.
