KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol redshirt sophomore diver Tori Lamp earned a spot in the platform quarterfinals after notching second in the event prelims Thursday evening at the USA Diving Winter Nationals held at UT's Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
"Tori had an outstanding list tonight," Tennessee head diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She missed one dive a little bit, but that dive has improved. As that gets better, she's going to be a real tough diver to beat. I've very proud of how she competed."
Lamp accumulated a career-best five-round tally of 351.50, only behind Chen Ni of Starz Diving Club, who won the prelims with a score of 356.40. During her prep career at IUPUI, Ni was the NCAA champion on the towers in 2010.
Lamp also shattered her own Lady Vol record in the event Thursday, as the Knoxville native broke the previous record with a score of 293.85 at the Tennessee Invitational in November.
The top 18 divers in the quarterfinals will advance to the semifinals, with the 12 best scores moving on to the finals. Any diver to make it to the final 12 qualifies for the Olympic Trials in Seattle in June.
