KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Long-time Volunteers football announcer George Mooney has passed away, the University of Tennessee confirmed. Mooney was 91.
Mooney was the Vols play-by-play announcer from 1952-1967, winning the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association's Most Outstanding Broadcaster Award in 1959, '61, and '62.
Mooney also founded the Vol Navy in 1962, an armada of Vols fans who enjoy game day on the Tennessee River. The flotilla started after he started using his runabout to beat gameday traffic to the stadium.
Mooney was also the president and operator of seven radio stations, including Knoxville's WKGN.
Mooney had four children: Kevin, Patrick, Comrie, and Deidre; and six grandchildren as well as six great-grandchildren.
