KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UT Release) – The Tennessee baseball team held its annual Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, with more than 400 Volunteer faithful coming out to Lindsey Nelson Stadium to meet the 2013 squad, tour the facility and take some swings in the batting cages.
“What an awesome turnout,” UT head coach Dave Serrano said. “Hopefully our fans walked away understanding my reasoning on why I'm so excited [after] getting to meet our players and see what kind of people they are. It's very refreshing to know that there's this much excitement in Knoxville area and East Tennessee about our program.”
Fans were able to personally interact with all of the 2013 Volunteers by hitting in the cages with them, playing ping pong and pool with them in the team room, getting personalized tours of the facilty or any number of other activities. Serrano also conducted a 30-minute question-and-answer session on the state of the Tennessee program.
Following Fan Day, those on hand were able to watch the team practice and scrimmage with a two-run home run by freshman David Houser highlighting the intrasquad game.
The Vols welcome 21 newcomers, including 18 freshmen, to the roster this season, in addition to returning starters such as senior pitcher Zack Godley, junior catcher Ethan Bennett and sophomore infielder Will Maddox.
Tennessee will open its season in less than a week when it travels to Las Vegas for a four-game set against UNLV, Feb. 15-17. The Big Orange will open its home slate Feb. 22-24 when perennial national power Arizona State makes its way to Rocky Top.
