Vols’ Christin Stewart invited to Team USA camp

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UT Release) - Tennessee rising junior outfielder infielder Christin Stewart has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2014 Collegiate National Team training camp, USA Baseball announced on Thursday.

The Lawrenceville, Ga., native becomes the 21st Tennessee player to be a part of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Former teammates Will Maddox and Zack Godley were both part in the Team USA camp in each of the last two seasons with Godley earning a spot as an alternate in 2012. UT head coach Dave Serrano served as the head coach of this team two seasons ago.

"It's such a blessing to have this opportunity to try and represent my country playing baseball," said Stewart, who was an All-SEC first team outfielder in 2014. "Being able to have USA across my chest and play the game I love is something I've always wanted to do. It is something I will remember forever and will not take for granted."

Serrano is excited that Stewart will receive this opportunity.

"The Tennessee baseball family is thrilled that Christin is getting this opportunity with Team USA," said Serrano. "I believe his first two seasons with us have warranted this wonderful opportunity. Wearing the red, white and blue will be something he will never forget."

Stewart was Tennessee's top offensive threat in 2014, becoming just the 11th player in program history to win the team "Triple Crown" by leading the Vols with a .330 batting average, five home runs and 39 RBIs.

The only player to play in all 54 of UT's games this year, Stewart also paced the squad with 45 runs scored, 72 hits, 19 doubles, six triples and a .541 slugging percentage.

The 2014 Collegiate National Team will be coached by Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn. The team's assistant coaches include Rob Childress (head coach at Texas A&M), Ray Birmingham (head coach at New Mexico) and Steve Rodriguez (head coach at Pepperdine).
The Collegiate National Team will play games against Chinese Taipei and Japan on U.S. soil while also making trips to The Netherlands for the Honkbal - Haarlem Baseball Week and to Havana, Cuba for a Friendship Series against Cuba. The Collegiate National Baseball team begins play on June 21 with the Red, White and Blue Tour in various cities across the United States.
