Vols add Tariq Owens to signing class

Knoxville, Tenn.--(UTSports) The Tennessee basketball program’s 2014 signing class continued to grow Wednesday, as head coach Donnie Tyndall announced the signing of Tariq Owens.

A 6-10, 210-pound forward from Odenton, Md., Owens plans to enroll at UT this summer. He will be a freshman next season and have four years of collegiate eligibility.

“Tariq is a very long, athletic and versatile post player,” Tyndall said. “For a guy his size, he has a really impressive skill level. He can step out and make 15- to 18-footers, and he certainly has the potential to impact the game at the defensive end early in his career.”

Owens initially signed with Ohio University last November, but he was released from his NLI following a coaching change there.

Owens attended St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, Md., before spending a post-graduate year at Mt. Zion Prep School in Baltimore. He was coached at Mt. Zion by Rodrick Harrison.

Prior to the 2013-14 season, Owens was rated by Scout.com as a four-star, top-100 prospect nationally. Rivals.com currently rates Owens as the eighth-best prospect in the state of Maryland.

Owens played AAU ball for the Baltimore’s Finest program.

He is the eighth member of Tennessee’s 2014 signing class, which has been assembled in less than one month. Owens joins signees Devon Baulkman, Willie Carmichael, Ian Chiles, Jabari McGhee, Eric McKnight, Detrick Mostella and Kevin Punter.
