KNOXVILLE Tenn. (release) -- The Vols scored 17 of the game's first 21 points on the way to an 86-60 victory over The Citadel on Monday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Vols (2-1) were led by Wooden Award candidate Jordan McRae (20 points) in the wire-to-wire victory, the sixth such win for UT under Martin.
Freshman Robert Hubbs III had the best scoring game of his young career with 13 points, including a sweet finish on an alley-oop late in the game. Senior guard Antonio Barton also added 13 points.
Tennessee dominated the smaller Bulldogs, outscored them 38-16 in the paint and outrebounding them 41-29. UT controlled the pace with a 15-0 advantage in fast break points.
Matt Van Scyoc led The Citadel (2-3) with 19 points. The Citadel was limited to just 34.5 percent from the floor, while the Vols shot 56.6 percent.
Tennessee was able to give most of its roster a chance to get substantial action in the victory. Freshman A.J. Davis tallied six points and made his first 3-pointer, Darius Thompson netted his first points, finishing with six points.
A dynamic alley-lop dunk by Josh Richardson off a feed from Thompson gave the Vols their first 20-point lead of the game at 53-33 with 14 minutes left in regulation.
The Vols built a 45-28 lead at halftime as Barton (10) and McRae (10) each scored in double-figures. Tennessee shot 61 percent from the floor and outrebounded The Citadel, 22-11 in the first half. UT's defense limited the Bulldogs to just eight field goals and 34.8 percent from the floor.
Tennessee was red hot from the floor making their first four 3-pointers, two each from McRae and Barton in the game's first eight minutes as the Vols opened a 26-9 lead.
The Vols began the game on a 17-4 run and never let the Bulldogs within single-digits the rest of the way.
This game was part of the 2013 Battle for Atlantis, which the Vols will continue in the Bahamas on Thanksgiving night, when Tennessee plays the first of three games at The Atlantis against UTEP on Nov. 28.
Prior to that trip, the Vols will host Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. That game will air on Fox Sports Net South and can be heard on the Vol Network.
