Vols' Jackson, Maggitt pick up league honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (release) -- For just the 11th time in school history, multiple players were found on the SEC’s Players of the Week list. Senior DL Malik Jackson earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, while freshman LB Curt Maggitt was awarded SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.

Recognized for their performances in Tennessee’s 27-21 overtime win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, Jackson and Maggitt became the first Tennessee duo to be honored by the SEC in the same week since Eric Berry and Jerod Mayo in 2007.

In the win, Jackson recorded six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss of 16, a forced fumble and a pair of quarterback hurries. His forced fumble, which was returned by junior defensive back Rod Wilks to the Vanderbilt 25, set up Tennessee’s first touchdown.

Jackson leads the Vols with nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries, which are the most by a Vol since Wes Brown had 12 in 2008.

Maggitt earned SEC Freshman of the Week accolades after posting seven tackles, including 2.5 stops that set the Commodores back six yards. His 2.5 tackles for loss were the most in a game by a Vol this season.

With 49 total tackles, Maggitt is fourth on the Vols and second among all SEC freshmen. Additionally, his 5.5 TFLs rank third on the team.

The West Palm Beach, Fla., native is UT’s second SEC Freshman of the Week honoree this season. Fellow linebacker A.J. Johnson earned the award for his performance against Alabama. It marks the first time Tennessee has had multiple rookies win the award in a single season.
