Knoxvill;e (WVLT-TV), Ernie Robertson, a film and television pioneer and long-time fixture in the UT Film and Photography Department, passed away Friday in Knoxville. Robertson was the brains as well as the eye behind many memorable Tennessee football and basketball images and film-clips from the 1960’s, ‘70’s, ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Among his notable trademarks was the famous “stop-action” film technique which changed the way football games were captured on film and presented to their audience.
“For four decades, Tennessee fans have taken pride in the quality of University produced TV coverage and programs of football and basketball,” said former Voice of the Vols, John Ward, Robertson’s long-time friend and partner in many UT projects. Said Ward, “It started with Ernie Robertson who set the high level of quality that other schools and other talented individuals have tried to maintain. As far as the coverage of the game and the people behind the game, no one could match Ernie Robertson. He was simply the best.”
Funeral arrangements are pending.
