FARRAGUT (WVLT) -- Pristine conditions and crisp play led to low scores in the first round of the Knoxville Open Thursday at Fox Den Country Club.
Knoxville's Chris Kirk shot a six-under-par 66 to top the leaderboard alongside Arjun Atwal and Jarrod Lyle.
Several other locals fared well during the tournament's first round. Strawberry Plains' Caleb Marsh finished the day one-under, while Knoxvillian Keith Nolan shot two-under and UT golfer Phillip Pettit ended the day at even par.
The first day of the Nationwide Tour event drew a strong turnout, the 80-degree temperatures providing fans and players alike with a pleasant atmosphere.
The first golfers tee off Friday at 7:15am.
