( -- Two former members of the Tennessee men’s track and field team advanced to the finals in their respective events at the US Olympic Trials at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene. Tim Mack made it to the finals in the pole vault and Jebreh Harris ran to the final in the 800.

Mack, the 1995 NCAA Indoor champion and three-time All-America, advanced to the pole vault final after clearing 18-0 1/2 in the qualifying round Friday. Mack, who won gold in Athens, Greece, while breaking the Olympic record in the 2004 Summer Olympics, is one of 13 vaulters that made it to the finals.

Harris, a two-time All-America while lettering for the Vols in 2000 and 2001, advanced to the finals in the 800 for the second time in as many Olympic Trial competitions. Harris, a volunteer coach for Tennessee, recorded the ninth-fastest quarterfinal time Friday with his 1:49.29 clocking before running 1:46.29 in Saturday’s semifinal to clinch his spot in the final. Harris finished sixth at the 2004 Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif. This year’s final is scheduled for an 11:25 p.m. Eastern time start Monday night.

Current Vols Rubin Williams and Evander Wells ran qualifying races in the 100 Saturday. Williams crossed the finish line in 10.16 for the 16th-fastest time in the qualifying round before running 10.26 and failing to advance past the quarterfinal. Wells stopped the clock in 10.28 in the qualifying round and did not advance to the quarterfinal. Both athletes also are entered in the 200, with competition in that event beginning Friday.

Action begins in the decathlon Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Three athletes with Tennessee ties are entered as current Vol and four-time All-America Jangy Addy joins former Vol All-Americas Chris Helwick and Tom Pappas. Mack contests the pole vault final beginning at 5:40 p.m. The top-three finishers in each event that have reached the Olympic ‘A’ standard qualify to represent Team USA in this year’s Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
