KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Right now when Lane Thomas suits up, it's as a Bulldog.
After next year, it'll be as a Vol.
In between, he's hoping to do so as a member of Team USA.
The Bearden High School outfielder was one of 144 players nationwide invited to tryout for the USA 18U national team.
The tryout took place from June 18-24 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
Sunday, Lane learned he was one of 40 players to make the first cut.
"I was pretty nervous when they were calling names out," Thomas said Monday afternoon shortly after arriving back in Knoxville.
"You're like, 'please I hope I am there.' It went good. It was just cool to see my dad's expression. He was real happy."
Thomas performed well in his first game. He went 2-for-3, with a double and a triple. The rising senior believes that carried a lot of momentum thru the tryouts.
"There were a lot of eyes on that game and I think that's what caught some attention that first day."
Last year as a junior, Thomas hit .380 with 8 home runs.
As a sophomore, he had one game in which he hit two grand slams in the same inning.
Thomas will fly to California August 16 for the next tryout. That's when the final cut will be made when Team USA trims the roster down to 20.
