KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Long before Alice Cooper hears the sounds on stage, he hears the sounds of a golf course.
"I play golf in the morning. Rock and roll at night," Alice Cooper said Tuesday afternoon at Gettysvue Country Club.
Golf, then rock, has a been a rockin' combination for the music legend the last 30 years, but Alice says golf was only added after he took away something else.
"I quit drinking and started playing golf and that was the trade-off. I use to drink everyday and I got up one morning and started throwing up like a good rock star is suppose too. The next thing you know, I'm in the hospital. When I came out I decided I needed a new addiction, but it had to be something that was positive."
Golf was that positive.
"I was a good baseball player. So I said golf shouldn't be that hard then. I came out and the first day I picked up a stick I hit it right down the middle."
That first year, Alice had a nine handicap. It's now down to four. He thanks another rock star in his own right, John Daly, for the low scores.
"He (Daly) said I don't have to help you hit the ball long, just hit it straight. He said when you're around the green that's where I'm gonna make you a good player. So I learned a lot of shots from John Daly."
When fans see Alice Cooper with mic in hand, it's far from the Alice Cooper with a driver in hand. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says the two sides of Alice don't collide.
"When I play golf, I never, ever think of a concert that night. When I'm on stage, I'm playing Alice then and golf never occurs to me. Playing Alice is a full-time concentration. You have guillotines and there's things and you had better be in the right spot."
Alice Cooper performs at the Tennessee Theater at 9 pm Tuesday night.
