KODAK, Tenn. (smokiesbaseball.com) -- Justin Bour and the Tennessee Smokies finally broke through in a big way in Monday’s game with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Bour’s 12th inning single scored Nate Samson to give the Smokies a 5-4 win at Smokies Park. With the win, Tennessee improves their 2012 record to 10-9. Chattanooga drops to 8-11.
Tennessee’s execution in the 12th was almost picture-perfect. Samson led off the frame with a walk. After Mike Brenly delivered a sacrifice bunt to move Samson to second off Geison Aguasviva (1-1). Bour then delivered a single to left field to bring home Samson, and give the Smokies the win.
Early on, the Smokies got to Chattanooga starter Aaron Miller right from the start. Elliot Soto led off the Smokies’ first with a ground-rule double, and would score on a triple by Logan Watkins. A wild pitch would bring in Watkins, and two batters later Jonathan Mota would hit his first home run of the season to put the Smokies ahead 3-0.
With the score tied 3-3, the Smokies would take the lead again in the fifth inning when Soto hit a one-out triple and would be brought home on a Watkins sacrifice fly to give Tennessee a 4-3 lead.
Smokies starter Dallas Beeler would allow another run to score in the sixth and exit after 5.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out three.
Tennessee relievers Alberto Cabrera, Kevin Rhoderick and Marcus Hatley would hold the Lookouts to two hits in their combined 5.1 innings of work.
Heading into the 12th inning, Smokies skipper called upon Mota to take the mound. Mota allowed a leadoff single to Pedro Baez. After a fly out, Mota got some help when Samson snagged a line drive from Travis Denker and doubled off Baez at first to end the threat for Chattanooga.
Mota (1-0) would end his big night going 2-for-4 at the plate and also picked up his first professional win as a pitcher.
The Smokies and Lookouts will conclude their five-game set Tuesday morning at 11:30 a.m. at Smokies Park. RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (1-0, 4.76) will start for Tennessee and RHP Matt Magill (0-1, 8.25) will go for Chattanooga. For tickets fans can visit www.smokiesbaseball.com or call (865) 286-2300.
