Cubs select Heritage's Clifton in 12th round of draft

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Kentucky signee, Trevor Clifton started the day as a Wildcat.

Around 1:15 pm that changed. That's when the Heritage High School pitcher simply wrote on his Twitter account: "Im a cub"

The Chicago Cubs selected the hard-throwing right handed pitcher in the 12th round of Saturday's Major League Baseball draft.

Clifton will forgo the his baseball scholarship at Kentucky to pursue his dream of playing professional baseball.

"I know I'm gonna work as hard as I can to get where I need to be," Clifton said.

"If that's one year, if that's two years, or three years, I don't know, but I'll make it there (Major League Baseball) eventually. This means the world to my parents so I'm glad that I could make that happen. It means the world to me, too. It's been my dream ever since I was a little kid."

Clifton, 6'4", consistently throws in the low -to-mid 90s. His fastball has been clocked reaching 97 mph.

While Clifton wouldn't divulge into the specifics of his agreement, he did say he was getting "third round money."

Clifton had hoped to go in the higher rounds. That didn't happen, making for some very anxious moments.

"I mean the past 3 days it's just been very stressful, like losing sleep and everything. Today it is just a relief just knowing that I'm living my dream."

Clifton will leave for Arizona next week when Cubs rookies are set to report for camp.
