WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Roger Federer is back on top of the tennis world.

The third-seed beat Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final, extending Britain's wait for a homegrown men's champion. The fourth-seeded Scotsman was trying to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to claim the title at the All-England Club.

But it was Federer hoisting the winner's trophy on Centre Court for a record-tying seventh time. His record-extending 17th Grand Slam victory boosts him back to No. 1 in the world.

Play was halted by rain early in the third set and the retractable roof over Centre Court was closed before they resumed play following a 40-minute break.

Federer is now 17-7 in Grand Slam finals, including 7-1 at Wimbledon. Murray dropped to 0-4 in major finals, with three of those losses coming against Federer.

Murray was playing in his first Wimbledon final after three previous losses in the semifinals.
