The Southeastern Conference office announced Monday that Tennessee guard Trae Golden has been named SEC Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 18-24.
This is Golden’s second SEC Player of the Week award this season, as he previously garnered the honor on Dec. 17.
The Powder Springs, Ga., native has been the catalyst of UT’s current five-game win streak, and he is coming off his best week as a Volunteer.
In Saturday’s four-overtime road victory – the longest game in school history – Golden played 56 minutes and scored 15 of his career-high 32 points after regulation. He delivered two game-changing jumpers in the fourth overtime. The first, coming off his own offensive rebound with 2:46 left to play, gave Tennessee an 83-80 lead. The next, one possession later, pushed it to a five-point lead.
Golden had earlier made a jump shot with 18 seconds left in overtime to force a second extra period.
He made 19 of 20 free throws last week (.950) and averaged 26.0 points.
Against LSU’s talented backcourt last Tuesday, Golden totaled 20 points and a game-high eight assists.
During UT’s win streak, Golden is shooting 48 percent and averaging 20.8 points, 4.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds.
This is the third SEC weekly honor received by a Vol this season, as sophomore power forward Jarnell Stokes was named SEC Player of the Week on Feb. 11.
As a sophomore starter last season, Golden earned one SEC Player of the Week honor (Nov. 14, 2011).
Monday’s most recent honor for Golden marks the sixth SEC weekly award received by a Vol during the tenure of second-year head coach Cuonzo Martin.
Golden and the Vols are back in action Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET when they host Florida at Thompson-Boling Arena. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
