BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. (WVLT/SUBMITTED) -- Tennessee junior pitcher Ellen Renfroe was named SEC Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Renfroe earned the honors twice last year and has now been named SEC Pitcher of the Week five times in her career, which stands second in UT history only to Monica Abbott's 16 times winning the award from 2004-07. She is the third Lady Vol to earn 2013 SEC weekly honors, joining Raven Chavanne (Player of the Week , March 25) and Lauren Gibson (Co-Player of the Week, March 18).
No. 5 Tennessee (34-6, 9-3 SEC) enjoyed a 5-0 week and Renfroe played a role in four of those wins. She went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 16.1 innings in four appearances this past week. She limited opposing hitters to a .113 batting average for the week. Renfroe earned both wins in the Lady Vols' series sweep of Georgia. On Friday, she struck out three over the final 1.2 innings of UT's 10-3 victory. Renfroe tossed five-strikeout complete game to lead UT to a 9-2 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. She struck out six over six strong innings to earn a 6-1 win over UGA on Sunday in the series finale. Renfroe also tossed 1.2 hitless relief innings with three strikeouts in the Lady Vols' 19-1, five inning rout of Tennessee State on April 2.
Renfroe, who was a 2013 Preseason All-SEC pick and Top 50 "Watch List" player for the 2013 USA Softball Player of the Year award, has compiled an 11-1 record and a 1.49 ERA on the year. The Jackson, Tenn., native has struck out 122 batters over 108.0 innings in the circle and limited opponents to a .178 batting average.
The Lady Vols will next host Tennessee Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Wednesday’s game is Knox County School Supply Day. Fans who donate two school supply items for the Knox County Teacher Supply Depot will receive a free reserved bleacher-back ticket, based on availability. Kids 12 and under will receive free admission and a complimentary bleacher back ticket, based on availability.
