Lady Vols soccer team setting records during hot start

Updated: Tue 9:32 PM, Sep 20, 2011

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- At 7-1, the Lady Vols soccer team is off to the best start in program history.

Head coach Angela Kelly says it is all a matter of focus and accountability. "Well I think the majority of the team just became accountable in the offseason. It's really their responsibility and when they come on to campus, how much better do you want to become?"

A large part of their early success can be attributed to Sophomore Caroline Brown, who leads the nation with 5 game winning goals. Brown says, "I think a lot of it has to do with doing a lot of the little things right. Doing that, you'll be in the right place when the time comes, so I think that's what a lot of it is."

Tennessee has also set a club record with 5 straight shutouts. Lady Vols Freshman keeper Julie Eckel says it's purely a team effort. "It starts at the front of the team with the forwards and goes all the way back to the defense. So it's really just a team effort. So it certainly wasn't my own efforts."

The shutout streak has reached 455 minutes, 2 minutes short of the school record. That is over 7 and a half hours without giving up a goal.

Tennessee opens SEC play on Friday night when they host South Carolina.
