EMORY, Vir. (release) -- The Emory & Henry Wasps took advantage of a pair of miscues by the Scots of Maryville College to earn a 27-21 victory on Saturday in Emory, Virginia.
Emory & Henry tested MC's defense on their first possession after the Fighting Scots went three-and-out. The Wasps converted a pair of key third down conversions to sustain their first drive and closed the series with an 11 play, 67 score. From eleven yards out, Kyle Boden connected with Chad Williams for the games first score. Austin Breed's kick gave Emory & Henry a 7-0 lead after marching down the field in only 3:39.
With 4:04 remaining in the first quarter, Maryville put together their most sustained drive. Back-to back long runs by Travis Felder and Chad Brooks put MC on the end zone doorstep. A quick pass from Evan Pittenger to Ben Buell gave the Scots a first and goal. E&H's defense held and a 21 yard field goal attempt by Lucas Underwood sailed wide left to close out the first quarter with a 7-0 Emory & Henry advantage.
Maryville's defense held the Wasps on their next possession and the Scots marched back down the field once again. A pair of long runs by Felder put Mc in E&H territory and a quick pass to tight end Jared Miller put MC on the 28 yard line. The eight play, 40 yard drive was turned over on downs as the Scots could not push the ball past the 21 yard line.
At the 6:54 mark, Emory & Henry were threatening once again. A 44 yard pass completion from Boden to Cleo Cooper was stripped by Maryville's Gabe Johnson and Ruben Rodgers recovered to give the Scots the ball on their own 18 yard line.
The Scots looked to capitalize and promptly dashed down the field 82 yards on a dozen plays capped by a six yard Travis Felder touchdown scamper. Underwood's kick tied the game at 7-7 with two minutes remaining in the first half.
MC's defense held the Wasps to force a punt and the Scots took over at midfield following a poor kick. Following a 21 yard Felder jaunt, Lucas Underwood attempted a 45 yard field goal with one second remaining. As the kick fell short, the teams went to the locker room tied 7-7.
On Maryville's first possession of the second half, the Scots marched down to the Wasps' 24 yard line. A fumble on a handoff exchange thwarted the drive and E&H would answer with a sustained 14 play, 73 yard scoring drive. E&H converted three third downs during the drive before Boden hit Cleo Cooper with a 19 yard touchdown pass. Austin Breed's kick made the score 14-7 in favor of the Wasps as the third quarter wound down.
The Fighting Scots answered on their next drive with a 13 play, 80 yard drive of their own. Pittenger finished off the drive dashing out of the pocket and hitting Travis Felder with a 22 yard scoring pass. At the beginning of the final quarter the score stood at 14-14.
E&H answered to make the score 21-14 on their next drive. A 24 yard pass from Boden to Cooper set up a 10 yard scoring pass from Boden to Lucas Kirby to complete a nine play, 68 yard drive.
Maryville was poised to trade punches with their rival on their next drive. Unfortunately, E&H's Ryan Byrd stepped in front of an out route and dashed 28 yards for the "pick six". The conversion failed, but Emory & Henry's lead advanced to 27-14, a 13 point swing in less than four minutes.
With just under three minutes remaining, Maryville marched 73 yards on eight plays and scored on a Trenton Shuler nine yard touchdown run. Underwood's kick made the score 27-21, but E&H covered the ensuing on-side kick to preserve the victory.
