Middle school combine has good turnout

Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT) - The turf at Grace Christian was flooded with 6th, 7th and 8th grade football players from across East Tennessee.

The middle schoolers were hoping to improve their skills and impress the talent evaluators picking players for a future stars game against Kentucky. The Knoxville event was the third and final event in the evaluation process.

Event Coordinator Josh Jones says, "It's a great way for the kids to come out from all areas. Representing all programs, all counties, communities, etc. And just compete, go through the drills. Learn a little bit while they're here. We've got some really good instructors. We've got some high school coaches. We've got some UT players here. We've got some ex-UT players here. So it's a great way for them to learn."

Current Vols Devrin Young and Marlon Wall along with former Vol Todd Kelly, Sr. were instructors at the combine.

Former Vol Tee Martin, whose son was working out wishes they had events like these back when he was playing, "When I was in middle school I didn't know how to get into a 40 stance. Shoot, I didn't know how do none of these drills. But times have changed." Devrin Young agrees, "They didn't have this when I was a little bit younger. But it would have been cool. It would have been a good experience. And it would have been nice to see the other talent around you rather than just at John Carlton."

The Tennessee roster will be announced on May 3rd. The game will be played on June 16th.
