PEARL, MS. (release) -- Aaron Northcraft pitched five scoreless innings for the Mississippi Braves as they won the series finale over the Tennessee Smokies 6-0 at Trustmark Park. The Braves won four of the five games in the series over the Smokies, the first team to do so this season.
Tennessee (15-14) was shutout for the second straight game and fourth time in seven contests. They have not scored a run in their last 22 innings played.
Mississippi (19-11) scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Barrett Kleinknecht brought home Shawn McGill with an RBI single for a 1-0 Braves lead.
The Braves added three unearned runs to their total in the 4th. Edward Salcedo reached on a Christian Villanueva two-base throwing error to begin the inning and scored on a Kyle Russell ground-rule double. Later in the frame, Northcraft helped his cause lining a two-run single to right field to double the advantage to 4-0. The hit marked the second straight game that the Smokies have surrendered a two-run hit to the opposing starting pitcher.
Salcedo made it 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a line drive single to left field that scored Christian Marrero.
Smokies starter Kyle Hendricks (1-2) was pulled after five innings and took the loss. He allowed five runs, two of them earned, on a season-high nine hits.
Kleinknecht picked up his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI single to score McGill and make it 6-0 Mississippi.
The Smokies return home on Tuesday to begin a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons at 7:15 PM. Tennessee sends right-hander Matt Loosen (0-0, 3.86) to the mound against Birmingham lefty Spencer Arroyo (2-1, 2.36) at Smokies Park.
