Smokies fall in extra innings to Biscuits, 9-6

KODAK, Tenn. (release) -- The Tennessee Smokies were unable to hold on to their lead Sunday afternoon and fell to the Montgomery Biscuits Sunday afternoon by a score of 9-6 in 11 innings. The loss, in front of 2,493, dropped their record to 10-7 on the season.

For the second straight game, the Smokies got on the board early. With Biscuits starter Matt Buschmann on the mound, Tennessee scored four times in the second inning. Following a walk to Johermyn Chavez to load the bases, the Smokies took advantage of a Buschmann wild pitch to score Ha from third. Two batters later, Matt Szczur singled to center field scoring Silva and Chavez. Then to end the scoring, Jonathan Mota singled to right to score Giansanti to give the Smokies the 4-0 lead.

Montgomery cut their deficit in half, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings off Tennessee starter Alberto Cabrera. The Smokies answered right back in the fifth. With two on, Silva plated Arismendy Alcantara to extend Tennessee’s lead, 5-2.

The Biscuits would get to Cabrera again, this time in the sixth inning. After Todd Glaesmann was hit by a pitch, Mayo Acosta hit his second home run of the season to narrow the Smokies’ lead to 5-4. Tennessee answered back once again, when Christian Villanueva drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Smokies a 6-4 advantage.

Cabrera would hand the ball off to the Smokies bullpen. After Marcus Hatley tossed a scoreless 1.2 innings, Montgomery would tie the game off reliever Kevin Rhoderick, scoring two runs in the eighth inning.

The two teams would exchange scoreless ninth and tenth innings, but in the 11th, the Biscuits scored three runs off Smokies reliever Tony Zych (0-1). With runners at second and third and one out and the infield drawn in, Ty Morrison hit a groundball to Ronald Torreyes, who threw wildly to the plate, allowing two runs to score. Mahtook later followed with an RBI-triple to give the Biscuits a 9-6 lead.

In the eleventh inning, Montgomery broke the tie when Ty Morrison hit a groundball with runners on second and third. The Smokies had their infield drawn-in, but second-baseman Ronald Torreyes threw wildly to the plate, allowing two runs to score.
