KODAK, Tenn. (release) -- Riding a four-game win streak heading into Saturday night’s showdown with Montgomery, the Tennessee Smokies showed little mercy collecting 13 hits on way to a 11-4 win over the Biscuits (8-8) in front of 3,523 at Smokies Park. With the win, the Smokies (10-6) hold the best record in the Southern League.
It didn’t take long for the Smokies to get on the board as Matt Szczur reached on a throwing error to lead off the Smokies’ first and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ronald Torreyes walked and Szczur advanced to third on a passed ball. Arismendy Alcantara took the first pitch he saw from Biscuits starter Jacob Thompson (1-2) deep to right field for a three-run home run, his third home run of the season.
Leading 3-2 in the third, the Smokies extended their lead again when Torreyes singled and advanced to second on a single by Christian Villanueva. Jae-Hoon Ha doubled home Torreyes and two batters later, Johermyn Chavez hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Villanueva and Ha giving the Smokies a 6-2 lead.
Matt Szczur led off the fourth with a solo home run, his second of the season making the score 7-2. An inning later, Chavez hit a RBI-double, scoring Rubi Silva who reached on a single to centerfield and Szczur hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Chavez in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase Tennessee’s lead to 9-2.
Montgomery narrowed Tennessee’s lead to 9-4 in the sixth when Mikie Mahtook hit an RBI-triple off Smokies starter Dallas Beeler.
Beeler (1-2) went seven innings, giving up four hits and four runs (two earned). He walked one Biscuits batter and struck out three. He threw 86 pitches, 53 of which were strikes.
Tennessee added two insurance runs in the seventh. After walks to both Rafael Lopez and Jonathan Mota, Szczur hit a RBI-double to left scoring Lopez. On the next pitch, Torreyes hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Mota.
The Smokies relievers Zac Rosscup and Frank Batista combined to go the final two innings not allowing a batter on base and striking out three.
