Smokies honor all branches of military with "Salute to Heroes Night"

Kodak, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Smokies honored all members of the US military with their "Salute to Heroes Night". It had everything you could expect from this type of event. Included were a gun salute, doves release, flyover, singing and of course the playing of taps.

President of the Smoky Mountain Blue Star Mothers organization Rhonda Miller says it was a very emotional day,"It's very tough. I'm keeping my glasses on so you don't see the tears. But when you look around and you see all of these families that are affected and what's going on in our world today, it pulls very, very deeply on your heart strings."

For one member of the Smokies organization the event had added meaning. Team doctor, Colonel John McGraw, is an army reservist who spent time this winter on the Pakistani border taking care of wounded service members. He believes this kind of an event is exactly what the team is about, "The Smokies have been the most patriotic of all of our Southern League teams because they really appreciate all of the sacrifice and service that our men and women in uniform have done through the years."
