5 future Vols selected in MLB draft

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The 2012 Major League Baseball draft is over. After 40 rounds and 1,238 selections, five players that signed with the University of Tennessee were drafted.

Adam Giacalone (Neosho County CC) was the first UT signee to get drafted. The pitcher/first baseman was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round.

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Smith (USC Sumter) went to the Texas Rangers in the 19th round.

Vincent Jackson, a pitcher who can also play the outfield (Luella HS, McDonough, Ga.) was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 23rd round.

Vance Vizcaino, an infielder from Wakefield HS in Wake Forest, NC, was taken by the New York Mets

Finally, Farragut shortstop A.J. Simcox was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 32nd round.

Before the draft, Simcox knew he would most likely attend Tennessee, putting professional baseball on hold. Nevertheless, getting drafting, he says, was still a surreal feeling.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet. I'm not even 18 yet. You know, just to be in that situation is an awesome feeling," Simcox told Local 8 Sports Wednesday night.

"I grew up (and) Tennessee was a successful baseball program. I grew up in it. I went to three World Series as a bat boy. I'm just hoping that we'll be able to get back there during my collegiate career."

It is believed all five of these players will attend Tennessee and not opt for professional baseball at this time.
