Knoxville, Tenn.--(UTSports) The Tennessee men’s basketball team is set to play a pair of exhibition games against Division II opponents at Thompson-Boling Arena in early November. The Volunteers host Florida Southern College on Saturday, Nov. 2 and will then welcome the University of Southern Indiana on Thursday, Nov. 7.
The Southern Indiana exhibition will tip off at 7 p.m. ET. Tipoff for the Florida Southern game will depend on the kickoff time of Tennessee’s football game at Missouri that day. Both exhibitions will be streamed live on www.UTsports.com.
Third-year UT head coach Cuonzo Martin will face his former college teammate when the Vols battle Florida Southern. Mocs head coach Linc Darner played alongside Martin at Purdue from 1991-94. In Martin and Darner’s three seasons together under Gene Keady, the Boilermakers went 65-30, won the 1994 Big Ten Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight that same year.
Last season, which was Darner’s seventh at FSC, saw the Mocs finish with a 27-6 overall record and advance to the Elite Eight. Their +6.8 turnover margin was the best amongst all NCAA Division II teams last year.
Southern Indiana, coached by Rodney Watson, posted a 23-8 record last season. Watson was an assistant coach at Southern Illinois during the collegiate playing career of current Tennessee assistant coach Kent Williams. And USI assistant coach Stetson Hairston was a teammate of Williams on those Southern Illinois squads.
Tennessee opens the 2013-14 regular season Nov. 12 at Xavier.
