Chavanne, Gibson named to 2013 USA Softball National team

OKLAHOMA CITY - Tennessee's Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson have been selected to the 18-player roster for the 2013 USA Softball Women's National Team, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball on Friday.

The roster was finalized on Friday following a three-day selection camp at the ASA Hall of Fame complex in Oklahoma City. The 18-player team will regroup in July for its first competition, the World Cup of Softball, which will run from July 11-14 in Oklahoma City.

Team USA will compete in three separate events in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Following the World Cup, the Women's National Team is slated to compete July 16-22 at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada and August 5-18 at an International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

USF head coach Ken Eriksen will serve as the head coach for the National Team. Tennessee co-head coach Karen Weekly will serve as an assistant coach in addition to Oregon State head coach Laura Berg, Golden West College head coach Suzy Brazney, LSU assistant coach Howard Dobson and Oregon head coach Mike White.

Chavanne last represented the U.S. in 2010 as a member of the USA Softball Women's Futures National Team. In the KFC World Cup of Softball V, she hit .389 (7-for-18) with three runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. She went 3-for-3 in a 2-1 upset of 2008 Olympic Gold Medal team Japan and had a key RBI single in the Americans' 9-3 win over Canada in the tournament.

As a senior in 2013, Chavanne hit .435 (19th nationally) with a career highs of seven home runs, 33 RBIs, 70 runs and 41 stolen bases. She was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year and was also a Top 3 Finalist for USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year and a finalist for the Senior Class Award. She was also a First Team All-SEC, an SEC All-Defensive Team and an SEC All-Tournament selection. Chavanne completed her incredible UT career as the school's all-time leader in batting average (.442), runs (244), on-base percentage (.509) and stolen bases (143). She was a four-time All-American and a three-time first-team pick (2011, 2012, 2013). Chavanne and Monica Abbott (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) are the only four-time All-Americans in Tennessee softball history. Chavanne maintained the same level of excellence in the classroom as she was also a three-time first-team Academic All-American (2011, 2012, 2013).

Gibson was a member of the U.S. Senior National Team in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, Gibson led the U.S. team with a .500 batting average and tied for the team lead with 24 hits. The 2012 team won gold in the World Cup of Softball VII and took silver in the Canadian Open Championship and the ISF Fastpitch World Championships. In 2011, Gibson and the U.S. won gold at the World Cup of Softball VI and the XVI Pan American Games. She hit .529 with eight runs, one homer, one double, three triples and eight RBIs during the 2011 Pan Ams.

Gibson also had a career-best year as a senior, hitting .401 with personal highs of 19 home runs (15th-most in nation), 68 RBIs, 14 doubles, 68 runs, a .538 on-base percentage and a .802 slugging percentage. Gibson was the 2013 SEC Player of the Year and earned NFCA All-American first-team honors for the third consecutive year (2011, 2012, 2013). She became just the fifth Lady Vol to become a three-time All-American, joining Abbott (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), Chavanne (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), Tonya Callahan (2006, 2007, 2008) and Lindsay Schutzler (2005, 2006, 2007). Gibson was also a Top 10 Finalist for USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year, a First Team All-SEC, SEC All-Defensive Team and SEC All-Tournament selection. Gibson's 19 home runs in 2013 set a new Tennessee single-season record. She finished her career ranked in the in the top 3 of many Tennessee offensive categories, including home runs (46, second), RBIs (216, third), slugging percentage (.644, tied for third) and on-base percentage (.484, tied for third).
