Chavanne, Gibson named top 10 finalists for USA Softball National Player of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Tennessee seniors Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson have been named Top 10 Finalists for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the year, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball.

This year's honors marks the third consecutive year (2011, 2012, 2013) that Chavanne has been named a Top 10 Finalist. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., was named a First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team selection on Tuesday and is enjoying a banner season, earning USA Softball Player of the Week honors on March 26 SEC Player of the Week honors on March 25. She is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and has earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 3 honors. Chavanne leads the SEC and ranks fifth in the nation with a .473 batting average. She also ranks fourth nationally with a 1.21 runs per game average and 11th in the nation with a 0.71 stolen bases per game average. Chavanne's .548 on-base percentage is the 12th-best mark in the country.

Gibson, who was named SEC Player of the Year, is having an incredible senior season. The Pasadena, Md., native was also named a First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team selection and is putting up astronomical offensive numbers. She is batting .430 on the year with a UT-record 18 home runs to go with an SEC-leading 65 RBIs. Gibson's 1.25 RBIs per game and her 1.13 runs scored per game rank eighth nationally. Her .879 slugging percentage is the 10th-highest in the country. She was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week on April 23 after setting a school record and tying an SEC record with three home runs in a game vs. Ole Miss.

Now in its 12th year , previous recipients of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award are UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman (2002), Texas pitcher Cat Osterman (2003, 2005 and 2006), Florida State pitcher Jessica Van der Linden (2004), Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott (2007), Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher (2008), Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie (2009 and 2010), Stanford shortstop Ashley Hansen (2011). Oklahoma Pitcher Keilani Ricketts, who took home the award in 2012, is looking to be just the third player to win multiple Player of the Year honors.

This year's finalists are comprised of seven seniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. The student-athletes selected represent seven NCAA Division I universities and five athletic conferences. Oklahoma leads the way among universities with three athlete representatives.

The three finalists selected from this list will be announced May 22, while the winner of the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be revealed on May 28 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.

The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award is voted on by coaching representatives from 11 Division I Conferences in the 15 ASA Regions as well as members of the media who consistently cover Division I Softball across the country, and previous Player of the Year recipients.
