Knoxville, Tenn.--(UTSports) Tennessee sophomore southpaw Andy Cox has been named to the watch list for the 2014 Gregg Olson Award, presented by Toolshed Sports to college baseball’s “Breakout Player of the Year.”
Cox is one of six Southeastern Conference standouts on the 80-player list, joining Will Allen (Ole Miss), Auston Bousfield (Ole Miss), Jon Keller (Alabama), Dillon Ortman (Auburn), Andrew Stevenson (LSU) and Michael Thomas (Kentucky).
After going 2-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 21 appearances as a freshman last year, the Arlington, Tenn., native has exploded on the college baseball scene this season. Cox has been a vital component of a vastly improved UT pitching staff, going 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in a team-high 25 appearances, including five starts.
With one weekend remaining in the regular season, Cox has been one of the most difficult pitchers in the nation to get a hit off of this year, yielding just 5.19 hits per nine innings, which ranks sixth among all NCAA hurlers. He has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the SEC as well, ranking among the league leaders in ERA (2.08), strikeouts (163), strikeouts per nine innings (8.18), earned runs allowed (13), opponent batting average (.171) and WHIP (1.02).
The award is named after former Auburn Tiger star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star.
Initial nominations were made by sports information/media contacts from schools across the country. The finalists and winner will be determined by an independent panel.
