Janzen Jackson enrolls at McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. (WVLT) -- Janzen Jackson is back home, and back to playing football.

Less than a week after Derek Dooley dismissed the All-SEC safety for undisclosed reasons, Jackson has enrolled at McNeese State.

McNeese State is located in Jackson's hometown of Lake Charles, La.

In a statement issued Friday, Jackson apologized to his former teammates at Tennessee and said thanks to those at McNeese State for giving him another chance.

“I would like to thank McNeese for giving me the opportunity to come back home and continue my education and football career," Jackson said.

"I would also like to apologize to my family, friends and the University of Tennessee for the mistakes I have made. I realize how fortunate I am to get a second chance and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

Cowboys head coach Matt Viator said that Jackson's first practice with the team will be Sunday, but added that Jackson will not play in the team's September 3 opener against Kansas.

Viator also said having some familiarity with the Lake Charles native factored into his decision to allow Jackson on the team.

"I think the fact that not only myself but really, the majority of our coaching staff, has a history with Janzen and his Dad (former Cowboy player and assistant coach Lance Guidry). We watched him grow up and have seen some of the really good qualities that he has.

"Obviously he's made some mistakes. He has an opportunity now to come home and get a second chance. We decided to give him that opportunity.”

Viator said it was important that Jackson wanted to enroll at McNeese State for educational reasons, not for just football.

Jackson withdrew from the University of Tennessee in February for personal reasons, but then returned in July.

Jackson played two seasons with the Vols, starting 23 games.
