Knoxville, Tenn. (WVLT/Submitted)-- After an amazing season and an incredible week at the 2013 Women's College World Series, the national runner-up Tennessee softball team received a warm welcome home on Wednesday as the Lady Vols' bus pulled into the Sherri Parker Lee Stadium parking lot.
Cheering with signs and airhorns, head football coach Butch Jones, head men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin, head baseball coach Dave Serrano, head women's soccer coach Brian Pensky and many other UT coaches, staff and student-athletes gave the Lady Vols an outstanding welcome home as the team stepped off the bus.
The softball team and its coaches were greeted with handshakes, hugs and congratulations from their fellow Vols and Lady Vols and shared their experiences of the past week at the WCWS with members of the local media. Many of the campers from the UT soccer camp also cheered on the players and got autographs from their favorite Lady Vols.
Although it may have been a sea of Oklahoma red at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium the past two days, the team knew that it had the backing and full support of the Vol Nation and Big Orange fans around the country. Wednesday's reception was a terrific reminder of the tremendous sense of unity binds all members of the Tennessee family.
The Tennessee softball team fought hard this past month, storming through the NCAA Regionals, NCAA Super Regionals and the Women's College World Series to reach the best-of-three Championship Series against Oklahoma. Monday's Game 1 was an instant classic that stretched 12 innings and featured gutsy pitching performances by Tennessee's Ellen Renfroe and OU's Keilani Ricketts. The Lady Vols came up just short, falling 5-3 in what was the longest game in program history. UT went to battle again Tuesday night but Oklahoma took the national title with a 4-0 win.
