No. 4 Lady Vols smash record 5 HRs in 15-2 win over No. 21 Texas A&M


COLLEGE STATION, Texas (release) -- Madison Shipman hit two of No. 4 Tennessee's school-record-tying five home runs on Saturday as the Lady Vols crushed No. 21 Texas A&M, 15-2, in five innings to even the season series.

Tennessee (34-6, 10-4 SEC) scored five runs in the third, six in the third and four in the fifth. Texas A&M (28-18, 9-8 SEC) scored one in the first and one in the third.

Shipman went 3-for-4 on the day with two homers, three RBIs and two runs. Annie Aldrete was 2-for-4 with one homer, one double and two RBIs. Cheyanne Tarango went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs. Rainey Gaffin was 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. Megan Geer was hit a home run, drove in two runs and scored twice. Shaliyah Geathers went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot with one RBI and two runs. Haley Tobler was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run. Melissa Davin went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Erin Gabriel started and tossed 2.2 frames with one strikeout and two runs allowed. Gaffin (5-2) earned the win after striking out three over 2.1 perfect innings in relief.

Katie Marks (12-3) took the loss after issuing five runs over three innings. Abby Donnell gave up six runs over 0.2 relief innings. Lauren Ainsley and Kristen Davenport gave up two earned runs each after each pitched 0.2 frames.

Tennessee's five home runs in the win tied a school record set way back on April 25, 1999, in a 7-5 win against then-No. 15 Southern Mississippi. The win marked Texas A&M's first-ever, run-rule loss as an SEC team.

Texas A&M jumped out a to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With runners on the on the corners and no outs, Nicole Morgan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Emily Albus from third base. Erin Gabriel got out of the jam, inducing a groundout to third and a flyout to center field.

Tennessee exploded to five runs in the top of the third to seize control of the game. With one out, Shaliyah Geathers knocked a bloop single to center field. Megan Geer connected for a two-run home run to left field to give UT a 2-1 lead. In the next at-bat, Madison Shipman drilled a 3-1 pitch to left for a solo homer, her 13th long shot of the season. Two batters later, Melissa Davin ripped a single down the left field line. Cheyanne Tarango followed with a two-run bomb to right center, giving the Lady Vols a 5-1 advantage.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Cassie Tysarczyk hit a solo homer to right center to pull Texas A&M to within 5-2.Rainey Gaffin relieved Gabriel in the circle and induced a groundout to the circle to end the inning.

The Lady Vols poured on six runs in the fourth inning to build a commanding lead. With one out, Gaffin knocked a triple to center field. Shaliyah Geathers hit an RBI single to right field to plate Gaffin. Shipman then hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field to push UT's lead to 8-2. Four batters with the bases loaded, Haley Tobler ripped an RBI single to right field. Hannah Akamine followed with a two-RBI single to right field to push UT's lead to 11-2.

The Tennessee offense kept on rolling in the fifth inning, adding four more runs. With one on and one out, Annie Aldrete drilled a two-run shot over the scoreboard in left field. With two on and two outs, Taylor Koenig clubbed in RBI double down the left field line. Gaffin followed with an RBI single to the circle to plate Tobler and round out Tennessee's scoring at 15 runs.

Tennessee and Texas A&M will conclude their season series on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU with Cara Capuano as the play-by-play announcer and Cheri Kempf providing analysis.
