KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/SUBMITTED) -- The brackets for the 2013 Junkanoo Jam have been released, and the Tennessee women's basketball team has learned who it will face in the Bahamas.
Playing on Thanksgiving Day in the opening game of the four-team Lucaya Division bracket, Holly Warlick's squad is slated to meet Virginia at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Nov. 28 at St. George's High School Gymnasium in Freeport. Kansas State and SMU face off in the second Lucaya contest on that date, starting at 4:15 p.m. ET. There is no information at this time about whether or not the games will be televised.
The winners of those contests will meet for the Lucaya Division championship on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. ET. The losers of the two first-round games meet for third-place honors prior to the title game at 4:45 p.m. ET.
Four more teams are participating in the Junkanoo Jam, but they are scheduled to play in the Freeport Division bracket on Nov. 29-30. Oregon State and Penn State are slated to meet at 1 p.m. ET on Nov. 29, while Illinois State battles Florida at 3:15 p.m. that day. The championship and third-place games will be held on Nov. 30, but times have not been determined.
Tennessee leads the all-time series vs. Virginia, 13-3, but the Cavaliers have won two of the past four outings vs. the Lady Vols. An unranked UVa squad pulled off a shocking upset of No. 3/3 UT on Nov. 20, 2011, outlasting the Big Orange in Charlottesville, 69-64, the last time these programs faced one another.
The Lady Vols own a 5-1 record vs. Virginia in neutral site games. The last contest between the schools on a neutral floor came on March 25, 2000, as Tennessee cruised past the Cavaliers in an NCAA Mideast Regional semifinal game at Memphis, 77-56.
UT is 4-0 vs. Kansas State but has never faced SMU. The last meeting between the Wildcats and Tennessee came on Dec. 6, 1985, when the No. 11/14 Lady Vols handled K-State in DeKalb, Ill., 68-56, at the Northern Illinois Fastbreak Fest.
Tennessee will be making its first trip outside the country since the 2010-11 squad played three games at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Nov. 25-27, 2010. Interestingly enough, the Tennessee men's team also will be in the Bahamas over Thanksgiving. Cuonzo Martin's Vols will be playing at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1 in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The Radisson Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort will be the tournament host hotel for the Junkanoo Jam. The resort features 7.5 acres of white sand beach, three large pools, a casino, a fitness center, two golf courses, a full-size outdoor basketball court, tennis courts, 14 restaurants and an attached shopping village with over 70 stores, restaurants and a straw market. Water sports include jet skis, sailboats, kayaks and parasailing.
Basketball Travelers is offering fan packages for the tournament. The ground package includes 4-star hotel accommodations for four nights at the Radisson Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort, ticket to the game, bus transfers to/from games and airport, ticket to tournament banquet, group snorkeling trip and free green fees for golf.
Fans are responsible for airfare, trip cancellation insurance, tips and other incidentals, meals and transportation to and from the departure city.
