DURHAM, N.C. (UT Release) – Tennessee junior right-handed pitcher Zack Godley has been selected to participate on the Collegiate National Team as an alternate, USA Baseball announced on Sunday.
“When Coach Serrano called me up and told me that they were going to give me the opportunity to come down here and play for them, I was honored,” Godley said. “It is huge getting to play for Coach Horton, who was a mentor to Coach Serrano, and it’s great to get the chance to be around so many great players and see first-hand what it is that makes each of them so successful. I expect to learn a lot from this coaching staff and my teammates and am honored to have the opportunity to represent my country.”
The 6-3 right-hander is coming off a breakout season in which he emerged as the ace of the Volunteer pitching staff. Despite missing nearly a month due to an oblique injury, Godley was still able to post a 4-2 record and 3.50 ERA in 12 appearances, including 11 starts.
Godley worked a total of 69.1 innings, striking out 53 and holding opposing hitters to a .250 batting average. He came through in a number of big games for the Big Orange, leading UT to wins over Texas, Kentucky and two-time defending national champion South Carolina. In those three games, he posted a 2-0 record, a 2.61 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 20.2 IP.
The Bamberg, S.C., native becomes the 19th Tennessee player to be a part of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and the first since Blake Forsythe played on the 2009 squad.
The Collegiate National Team will play four games against summer league teams from North Carolina starting on Monday before the final 22-man roster is announced on the evening of June 28.
