SEATTLE, Wash. (release) -- Tennessee rising junior Tori Lamp and former All-American Michael Wright both held their position in the final round of their events at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials in Federal Way, Wash.
Lamp finished fifth in the platform with a three-round score of 948.25. Brittany Viola and Katherine Bell finished first and second to earn spots on the U.S. Olympic Team with 1,081.50 and 1,024.40 points respectively.
Lamp started the day 62.60 behind second place, meaning she needed a near career day to put her in contention for a spot in the Olympics.
“Tori had a solid day on the platform, but she was never able to really get it going today as I’d hoped she would,” Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. “She really needed to catch fire today to gain ground on the competition. The door opened for her a little bit but she wasn’t able to get the dives she needed. There were little mistakes here and there, but overall, I was very proud. This experience should bode well for her down the road.”
Wright stayed in 12th place on the 3-meter springboard, wrapping up his three-round cumulative score of 1,105.55.
The competition came down to the wire for the Olympic team spots with the three top divers separated by less than three points entering the final dive. Christopher Colwill finished first with 1,457.45 and Troy Dumais was second with 1,448.35 to grab the other Olympic spot. Kristian Ipsen was third with 1,447.10.
“I thought Mike gave a really solid effort today in what was an exciting competition and probably a historic Olympic trials,” Parrington said. “I’m proud of him to have made the finals and be a part of such an event.”
While the Tennessee divers are finished with the Olympic trials, the swimmers are just getting started. Seventeen current and former UT swimmers will be in action starting monday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb.
