Former Middle Tennessee High School Coach Killed In A Wal Mart Parking Lot

A longtime High School Basketball Coach and Gym Teacher was fatally shot in a Wal-Mart parking lot Monday while working at his family's fireworks stand.

62-year-old Willard Ross retired last year after a 40-year teaching and coaching career in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System.

Ted Haley, another high school coach who was a longtime rival during Ross' tenure at Northwest High School, said Ross was a bystander when a shootout occurred between people in two vehicles.

Thomas Cantrell told The Leaf-Chronicle Newspaper he and a friend were walking to their car when he saw a woman saying her husband had been shot. Cantrell tried to help the victim, who he said was shot in the face.

Northwest High Assistant Principal Shane Smith said there is no funeral home big enough to accommodate a memorial service for Ross.
