Most states keep prep steroids a local issue

After several months of investigating how to solve the problem of steroids in high school sports, a task force has essentially given up.

A spokesman said the group found that steroid testing programs are costly and would probably bring lawsuits.

An Associated Press analysis of the 50 states found that Texas, Florida and New Jersey are the only three with any kind of mandatory steroid testing for high school athletes.

Few other states have found enough support for the legislation.

Bob Baldridge of the Tennessee Athletic Association said it would be very difficult to have any kind of statewide program because of the differences between the regions.

Baldridge said -- quote -- "Nashville is closer to Canada than Memphis is to Mountain City, Tenn."
