(Sports Overtime) -- It's official. George Quarles can now add 'athletic director' to his championship resume.
For the past couple of months, the Maryville football coach has assumed the duties of athletic director. At a school board meeting Monday night, those duties became official.
"The job frees me up during the day," Quarles told Sports Overtime's Daryl Hobby Monday afternoon, "giving me time to meet with coaches since I no longer have to teach classes." Quarles had been the school's driver education teacher.
"I also felt it was time to do something different," Quarles added. "Financially it's a good move for me as well."
Is this is a sign that 40 year old could soon call it quits as a head football coach? No. "I definitely didn't take this position to ease out of football."
Quarles took over as Maryville's football coach in 1999. In the 8 seasons since, all he's done is capture 6 state titles and compile a staggering 108-9 record. The Rebels are currently the 3-time class AAAA defending state champs and will take a 45 game winning streak into its August 31st opener at Alcoa.
