Coatney calls it quits at Fulton

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Longtime Fulton Falcons head coach Buck Coatney has resigned to devote more time to his family and because of the demands of a new job he has with Knox County Schools.

Coatney was named Fulton's head coach in 1992, replacing current Sevier County head coach Steve Brewer.

Early on, it was tough flying for the Falcons, as Fulton went 1-9 in that first season, and 4-8 and 2-9 in years two and three respectively.

But toward the end of the 90's, Fulton started to make some noise the football and in the 2000s would form a dynasty.

From 2002 thru 2007, Coatney's Falcons won three state championships, with two runner-up finishes.

Coatney leaves with a 144-90 record and while he may not be head coach next season, he hasn't ruled out remaining on staff to help the program's next head coach.

That search begins immediately and will include candidates from the current Falcons staff.
