NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Cocke County football team has not had much success in recent years. In fact their last winning season came in 1996. But this year, the Fighting Cocks are off to a 4-2 start.
A big part of that has to do with an offense that is scoring over 34 points a game, which is over their original goal for the season says coach Greg Hacker, "Our goal when the year began was 27 points a game. We are 7 points over that now."
The team has rallied around the new motto for the season, "Finish." Coach Hacker brought it with him from college, and the team has completely embraced it.
The wins have also brought with them a new air of excitement in Newport for Cocke County football. Senior Linebacker Darren France states, "People I have never seen before come up and say nice job. It's just different now. Things are happening for us."
Depending on how the season finishes, the Fighting Cocks could host a playoff game. That is something that no one has discussed in those parts in a while.
