KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- As Austin-East gears up for the 2013 season, it does so with a new coach.
Jeff Phillips is now the coach in charge of the Road Runners. He replaced Brian Pankey, who is now the head coach at Kingston.
Phillips isn't working with a bare cupboard. A-E returns ten players on both offense and defense from a team that went 3-7 a year ago.
The strength of this team will be that returning experience, along with speed.
What Phillips is wanting: less mental mistakes.
"The one thing as coaches we do talk about is our discipline," Phillips said.
"We want to be one of the least penalized teams, the fewest penalized teams in the area. We also want to play fundamentally sound football and let our athleticism take us over the top. I think that will allow us to be successful."
Austin-East opens up the season August 23 at Grace Christian.
