Countdown to Kickoff: Grace Christian

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Grace Christian's probation is over.

"They're hungry," Rams' head coach Randy McKamey said.

In the spring of 2010, the TSSAA placed the Grace Christian athletic department on probation for the use of an illegal player. For two seasons, the football Rams were not eligible play in the postseason.

Last year, a talented Grace team took to the field and won every game. A perfect 10-0 record, but the season stopped there.

"There's nothing more we can do," running back Will McKamey said.

"You can't beat 10-0. So the fact that we have five more games to play for and a state championship, really, really excites the team. It's a lot to play for."

McKamey and his teammates aren't the only ones ready to hit the field.

"The coaches are too," head coach Randy McKamey said.

"Everybody talks about the players, and it is about them 100%. But I've got some coaches too that are pawing ground, getting ready to go. And now this group has a new goal, that's bring back the gold."

Football at Grace Christian is still relatively new. The program played its first game in 2005.

Now in his seventh year, McKamey has built the program into one of the state's top Class A teams. In the last five years, the Rams have posted a 38-8 record.

With seven starters back on both sides of the ball, it should be another good year for the Rams.

Grace Christian opens up the season August 16 at home against Carter. The game will be televised on MyVLT as part of Rivalry Thursday.
