Countdown to Kickoff: King's Academy

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- King's Academy rarely has a deep roster. This season, they'll play with just 30 football players. Such is life when you're the smallest school in the state that plays 11-man football.

While the numbers might not be there, you can never question the heart of these Lions.

"It's difficult at times," running back Harrison Atchley said.

"Obviously the competition doesn't have to do the same thing as us (each player playing offense and defense). It's a pride thing, saying 'we can go the whole game without stopping'".

Another challenge King's Academy faces is communication.

"This year we will have about four or five different nationalities represented. It makes it a little challenging," head coach Matt Evans said. "When they're from another country, they come in, and it takes them a while to learn the game, but once they learn the game, they play so hard."

"Diversity is big," Atchley added. "We have different Asian students. We've got Nigerians. Players from all different walks of life. They bring their cultures into the locker room and onto the field. We can teach them and they can teach us."

The Lions return 18 starters back from last year's squad. King's Academy opens up the season August 24 against Cosby.
