ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Maryville snapped Alcoa's 44-game winning streak Saturday night, topping the Tornadoes 26-19.
It was a game Alcoa kept close, but never led.
Maryville took its opening series and marched down the field and took a 7-0 lead after quarterback Patton Robinette ran in a bootleg from five yards out.
Alcoa would quick answer, however. On the Tornadoes' first possession, using a strong ground game, Vanderbilt Hambrick found the endzone on a short touchdown run, but Alcoa missed the extra point, making it a 7-6 game.
Maryville would score again and took a 14-6 advantage into the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, things heated up in the fourth. After a 58 yard run by Robinette, the drive was capped off by a Robinette to Shawn Prevo touchdown, extending the Rebels lead to 20-6.
DJ Oggs took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards, quickly getting Alcoa back in the game, 20-13.
But every time the Tornadoes crept closer, Maryville had an answer. Prevo would score his third touchdown of the game, giving the Rebels a 26-13 lead.
Alcoa would score to close the game to 7, but Maryville recovered the onsides kick and was able to run out the clock.
Prevo ended the night with 132 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns.
More than 7,000 fans packed Alcoa High School to watch the game, including NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice.
He will appear on the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. He'll also speak to both teams before the game, deliver the game ball and do the coin toss.
Rice spoke to both teams before the game started. He also tossed the coin before kickoff.
Rice makes public appearances on behalf of Kellogg's. Kellogg's was one of the sponsors of the game, which aired in high definition on WVLT-TV.
