Seymour hires new football coach

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Seymour High School went to Ohio to find its new football coach.

The Eagles have hired Jerry Cooper to fill the job. Cooper is 54 years old and has spent his entire coaching career in Ohio. Cooper spent the last nine years at Lima Central Catholic.

"We'd always vacationed in that area (East Tennessee) and I knew a couple of people and I was particularly looking to go to the state of Tennessee," Cooper told Lima television station WLIO.

"(Tennessee) works best in my retirement endeavors. And so I just found out about it and I made contact with the athletic director. He and I kinda hit it off and it was just kinda the perfect storm for me to end up there."

Cooper's overall record is 235-77, a mark compiled at five different Ohio high schools. He won a state championship in 2003 while at Columbus Grove High School.

Seymour had been looking for a new head coach since early November when Jim Moore stepped down.

Moore coached the Eagles for five years, compiling a record of 15-36.
