Stone Memorial advances at state, Loudon, Mo' East lose

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The first round of the TSSAA girls state tournament in Murfreesboro proved to be a tough one for several area teams.

Loudon, Morristown East, and McMinn Central all came up short in their respective attempts to advance to the semifinals.

Stone Memorial, however, was able to notch its first ever win at the tournament. The Lady Panthers beat Waverly Central 35-28.

The game was a defensive struggle, as things were tied 8-8 at halftime.

Ashley Cox led Stone Memorial (23-12) with 9 points. Waverly Central didn't have a player that scored more than 3.

Stone Memorial advances to the Class AA semifinals and will face Obion County Friday at 12:30 EST.

In the first game of the day, Loudon lost to Livingston Academy 45-31.

The Lady Redskins (28-5) were making their first appearance at state in more than three decades.

"We came out a little nervous. We hadn't been here in 35 years," Loudon head coach Bryant Collins said after the game.

"We started the game a little nervous. Once we settled down it was a little better. We didn't shoot the ball well. Not because of us, but because they played great defense.:

Loudon shot just 20 percent from the field. Chelsey Moore had a game high 15 points for the Lady Redskins.

Morristown East was on the cusp of a major upset, but Memphis Overton had just enough to beat the Hurricanes, 52-49.

Overton is ranked nationally in the top 25 in several girls rankings.

The Lady Hurricanes were led by Gaby Gilmore's 16 points. Morristown East finishes the year with a 29-6 record.

McMinn Central won't repeat as Class AA state champs. The Chargers fell to Obion County 69-60.

McMinn Central trailed 40-39 heading into the final quarter, but Obion outscored the Chargers by eight.
