2 dismissed Vanderbilt players get August trial

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Attorneys set a trial date on Wednesday for two former Vanderbilt football players charged with raping an unconscious fellow student.

Brandon Vandenburg, of Indio, Calif., and Cory Batey, of Nashville, are scheduled to stand trial Aug. 11.

Two other ex-players, Brandon Banks, of Brandywine, Md., and Tip McKenzie, of Woodville, Miss., are also charged with rape in the June 23 incident. Their cases were separated from the other two players on Wednesday.

All are 19 except for Vandenburg, who's 20.

They have been dismissed from the team and suspended from school. They are out of jail on bond.

Wide receiver Chris Boyd last month entered a conditional guilty plea to attempting to help cover up the crime. He was dismissed from the team but allowed to stay in school.
