KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The phrase "Vol For Life" can easily be attached to LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis. After all, he spent 24 years playing for and coaching at the University of Tennessee.
But on Saturday night he wore the purple and gold of LSU, leading the Tigers to a convincing 38-7 win over the Volunteers. After the game, Chavis was awarded the game ball says head coach Les Miles, "We gave John the game ball. He was very emotional. He certainly loves this place."
A very emotional Chavis said that he didn't want to focus on him. He would rather how it placed on his players. "I can't put it in words. You can't, I mean... Like I said... again. I don't want this to be about me. I'm an old football coach. An old country boy that was fortunate enough to be able to fall in love with the Sport. And had a passion for it. And had the opportunities to coach at some good places. As far as I'm concerned, it's never ever about me. And I don't want it to be about me. I want it to be about those guys that play out there between the lines", Chavis stated.
Miles said earlier in the week that Chavis is all Vol at heart and cheers for Tennessee every week of the season... except when they play LSU.
